A Regional Transportation Center

The Pitt County/Greenville area is centrally situated within eastern North Carolina. Several major U.S. and state highways converge in the area to provide easy access to the state's interstate highway system. Two of the nation's most extensive and financially healthy railroads traverse the county, intersecting in Greenville. The area is within 120 miles of three east coast ports capable of handling both bulk and containerized shipments. (For more information on NC Ports please visit www.ncports.com).  Air service is available through a local commuter airport with scheduled flights daily to Charlotte's Douglas International Airport.

Air Service

The Pitt County/Greenville area has access to commercial air passenger and air cargo service via three area airports:

  1. The Pitt-Greenville Airport

  2. The Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and

  3. The Eastern Regional Jetport (also know as the North Carolina Global TransPark).

Air Passenger Service

Pitt-Greenville Airport is located on four lane highway NC 11, ten minutes northwest of downtown, adjacent to the Greenville Industrial Park. The airport is centrally situated within Pitt County and easily accessible to surrounding smaller communities. The longest of three runways is 6500 feet with navigational aids allowing night and inclement weather landings. All aircraft services are available, including charters. Air passenger service is provided through USAir Express, offering daily departures from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. to Charlotte's Douglas International. USAir Express also maintains a crew base in Greenville.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport has over 400 daily arrivals and departures. Ten major airlines (Delta, USAirways, Continental, Northwest, Southwest, America West, AirTran, JetBlue, United, and American Airlines) and 17 regional carriers (including American Eagle, Continental Express, Air Canada Jazz, Independence, and Delta Connection) provide daily direct non-stop flights to 36 destinations in the United States, Canada, and Europe. The airport is located approximately 90 miles west of Greenville via US 264 and Interstate 40.

The Eastern Regional Jetport is located 30 minutes south of Greenville in Kinston.  No commercial service is currently available but many charter flights and the military take advantage of the facilities at the Jetport.

Air Cargo Service

Air Cargo service in the Pitt County/Greenville area is provided by several air freight carriers including FedEx, USAir, and DHL. Daily pick-up and delivery is available.

Global TransPark

The North Carolina Global TransPark (GTP) is located 30 minutes south of Greenville at the Eastern Regional Jetport (Stallings Field) in Kinston. The 2400 acre site is a combination of an air cargo airport as well as a modern transportation, manufacturing, and distribution complex.  The runway, at 11,500 feet, is the longest civilian runway in the state.

The GTP's unique facilities can provide industries with direct access to multimodal transportation alternatives. Intermodal capabilities will enable companies to use all of those alternatives for the most efficient and reliable transportation. The TransPark alsos provide an on-site education and training facility to prepare the workforce necessary for the industries and businesses locating in the area.

In May of 1996, the Global TransPark was designated as Foreign Trade Zone 214. The designation means companies can export and import products through the TransPark without many of the usual customs restrictions and tariffs.

Rail Freight Service

Pitt County is served daily by two of the nation's largest and most financially sound railroad systems - CSX Transportation Inc. and Norfolk Southern Railway Company.

CSXT and its 32,000 employees provides rail transportation and distribution services over 22,000 route miles in 23 states in the east, midwest, and south, the District of Columbia, and Ontario and Montreal, Canada. Direct shipments can be handled from Greenville to Miami, New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Buffalo, Montreal, and points in between without leaving the CSXT system. CSXT is a business unit of CSX Corporation and is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.

Norfolk Southern Railway's lines extend over 21,200 miles in twenty-two eastern US states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. Single line rail freight service is available between Greenville and many major cities including New Orleans, Birmingham, Memphis, Buffalo, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City. Norfolk Southern Railway is wholly owned by Norfolk Southern Corporation which is headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia.

Both rail systems operate two trains seven days a week and provide daily switching. Special switching arrangements can be made. CSXT bisects Pitt County, running north-south through Bethel, Greenville, Winterville, Ayden, and Grifton. Norfolk Southern runs east-west, serving Grimesland, Greenville, and Farmville. The two systems interconnect at Greenville.  For a map of the North Carolina rail system click here.

Van-On-Flat-Car (VOFC, TOFC, COFC, or "piggyback") service is available on the CSX system in Charlotte (197 miles) or Portsmouth, VA (104 miles). Regional Storage and Transport in Greenville also handles VOFC freight. VOFC shipments on the Norfolk Southern Railway are handled out of Greensboro (140 miles).

Public Rail Siding: CSXT operates a public track in Greenville, N.C. for loading and unloading of rail cars. The siding can accommodate up to 10 cars and is located off Dickinson Avenue adjacent to the company's freight depot. For more information contact: Customer Service Center at 1-800-327-5405.
